The Poetics of Groundhog Day – Bright Shadow

Saltarello Shadows

Saltarello shadows

breach sharpened daylight

shimmying along

delineated by squandered theatrics

shortchanged dreams

freed from flesh prisons

movement forged by cane-less memory

invigorated by lust’s commemorations

a semblance of youth, replayed

on screen of wide clapboards

as euphonious echoes linger

a last curtain call

in intercepted sunshine

Hi Randy = it is so interesting to think of our shadows freed from us weigher-downers. A very cool subject for your poem, and works really well. k.

this is really cool…love the pic and your take on the theme… freed from flesh prisons.. able to dance…again… the shadow as a shadow of the mind, not body…really cool

a last curtain call…smiles…i wonder at what our shadows might get into if not teathered to us…perhaps fulfil some of those dreams we failed to chase….

Even the shadows of sweet memories are sweet, and light on the palette as ‘intercepted sunshine’

Funny, I thought of the same image but couldn’t remember where I’d seen it and went somewhere else. Love the way you brought it into words. Shimmying along does deserve its own line.

‘daylight shimmying along’ is really wonderful. ‘flesh prisons’ also grabs me… you’ve captured some fresh images in this poem, and your last two lines sum it up quite nicely.

Excellent, Randy! Love the way you used the ‘s’ sounds in this poem! Love ‘salterello shadows’ and how those words roll off my tongue!

Beautiful musical and sibilant vision of shadow as more real in a way than the figures that block the sun to make them. Both negative (“delineated by squandered theatrics / shortchanged dreams . . .”) and positive (“freed from flesh prisons” and “cane-less memory / invigorated by lust’s commemorations / a semblance of youth, replayed . . . “), their resolution into one-last curtain call is lovely.
